RealGM's MLB Team Rankings Through 7/29/11

Aug 26, 2014 10:02 AM

The Opsera is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, July 28th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.30 The Yankees lead all of baseball with 135 home runs and have the third-highest OPS (.778) and number of runs scored (529). 2. (2) Boston Red Sox - 4.22 Aside from the power of New York, no one has been able to touch Boston offensively this season. If they acquire a pitcher at the deadline, the American League East will be all but wrapped up. 3. (3) Texas Rangers - 4.07 Texas has a team ERA of 3.77 (12th) and will likely add a reliever in the next few days. 4. (4) Philadelphia Phillies - 3.95 At "press time" the Phillies were hot after Hunter Pence, who would improve their middling offense enough to make them the favorite to represent the National League in the World Series for the third time in four years. 5. (6) Los Angeles Angels - 3.71 The Angels withstood the hot streak of the Rangers and sit just two games back in the AL West heading into the weekend. T6. (5) Atlanta Braves - 3.69 Down five games, catching Philadelphia is still possible, but Atlanta can rest assured that the NL Wild Card is theirs to lose. -- (8) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.69 St. Louis is hoping that Edwin Jackson will help improve their pitching enough to outlast the Brewers, Pirates and Reds. 8. (7) San Francisco Giants - 3.59 Carlos Beltran makes the Giants much better offensively with his presence alone. They scored four runs against the Phillies in a win on Thursday night, a half-run better than their season average. 9. (12) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.38 If Prince Fielder leaves, as expected, the Brewers are going to have some work to do to remain in the playoff conversation in 2012. 10. (10) Pittsburgh Pirates - 3.37 The Pirates are the best story in baseball this season, but they have to outlast three very solid clubs in order to make the postseason. Are they too young to realize what is at stake? 11. (15) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.36 12. (9) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.34 13. (T16) Chicago White Sox - 3.33 14. (11) New York Mets - 3.31 15. (T13) Oakland Athletics - 3.28 16. (T19) Cincinnati Reds - 3.25 17. (T13) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.21 18. (18) Detroit Tigers - 3.17 Biggest Jump: 19. (23) Florida Marlins - 3.14 20. (T19) San Diego Padres - 3.12 21. (22) Cleveland Indians - 3.10 Biggest Drop: 22.(T16) Colorado Rockies - 3.07 23. (21) Washington Nationals - 3.01 24. (24) Los Angeles Dodgers - 2.91 25. (25) Seattle Mariners - 2.70 26. (26) Kansas City Royals - 2.68 27. (28) Chicago Cubs - 2.54 28. (29) Baltimore Orioles - 2.43 29. (30) Houston Astros - 2.38 30. (27) Minnesota Twins - 2.37

In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, July 21st games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.29 The Yankees have held the top spot for quite a while, but they have just one win against the first-place Red Sox this season. 2. (2) Boston Red Sox - 4.16 The Red Sox will not be looking up at anyone for much longer if they add some pitching prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. 3. (4) Texas Rangers - 4.02 Coming off the longest winning streak in baseball this season, the Rangers were only able to jump up one spot as they leapfrogged the Phillies. 4. (3) Philadelphia Phillies - 3.91 Philadelphia is tied with San Francisco for the largest first-place advantage (four games) heading into the weekend. The addition of Roy Oswalt (disabled list) will only bolster their playoff chances. 5. (5) Atlanta Braves - 3.69 The Braves, second-place in the NL East and leading the Wild Card race, would hold down the top spot if they called the NL West home. 6. (6) Los Angeles Angels - 3.63 Despite the recent run of the Rangers, the Angels are just three games back in the AL West. 7. (9) San Francisco Giants - 3.59 If the Giants add a bat (see: Beltran, Carlos), they will improve their OPS (ranked 26th) and therefore their Ospera ranking. 8. (7) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.57 The Cardinals have slid down this list because of their pitching staff. 9. (8) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.49 They kept their playoff hopes alive by splitting a series with the Yankees this week. Still, they are 7.5 games back of the Red Sox and 5.5 back of the Bombers. 10. (10) Pittsburgh Pirates - 3.41 The next 10 games will determine whether or not Pittsburgh is for real and ready to make a playoff run. They will host the Cardinals before traveling to Atlanta and Philadelphia. 11. (13) New York Mets - 3.33 12. (14) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.31 T13. (12) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.29 -- (15) Oakland Athletics - 3.29 15. (11) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.26 Biggest Jump: T16. (19) Colorado Rockies - 3.23 -- (20) Chicago White Sox - 3.23 18. (18) Detroit Tigers - 3.22 T19. (21) Cincinnati Reds - 3.21 -- (22) San Diego Padres - 3.21 Biggest Drop: 21. (16) Washington Nationals - 3.16 22. (17) Cleveland Indians - 3.12 23. (23) Florida Marlins - 2.98 24. (24) Los Angeles Dodgers - 2.92 25. (25) Seattle Mariners - 2.78 26. (26) Kansas City Royals - 2.67 27. (28) Minnesota Twins - 2.46 28. (27) Chicago Cubs - 2.44 29. (29) Baltimore Orioles - 2.40 30. (30) Houston Astros - 2.30

In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, July 14th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.32 New York is starting to struggle on the mound, but CC Sabathia is still their ace and a Cy Young contender. 2. (2) Boston Red Sox - 4.18 Adrian Gonzalez may have lost to Robinson Cano in the Home Run Derby, but he is still the best hitter in the AL. He leads the league with a .354 average and 77 RBIs. 3. (4) Philadelphia Phillies - 4.03 The Phillies could finish the season with three 20-game winners (Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee). 4. (5) Texas Rangers - 3.90 Texas has won eight straight, allowing them to take a 1.5 game lead over Los Angeles in the AL West heading into this weekend. 5. (3) Atlanta Braves - 3.79 The Braves have the second-highest run differential (+53) in the NL, which perfectly falls in line with their second-best record (behind the Phillies). 6. (6) Los Angeles Angels - 3.83 7. (7) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.62 8. (8) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.54 9. (9) San Francisco Giants - 3.53 10. (13) Pittsburgh Pirates - 3.35 11. (11) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.28 Biggest Jump: 12. (18) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.28 The Blue Jays have reeled off four wins and their 16-7 rout of the Yankees on Thursday night helped spike their OPS for the week. 13. (15) New York Mets - 3.27 14. (10) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.24 15. (14) Oakland Athletics - 3.22 16. (19) Washington Nationals - 3.21 Biggest Drop: 17. (12) Cleveland Indians - 3.20 The Indians have the Tigers breathing down their necks with the White Sox and Twins in the waiting as well. 18. (20) Detroit Tigers - 3.19 19. (21) Colorado Rockies - 3.19 20. (16) Chicago White Sox - 3.18 21. (17) Cincinnati Reds - 3.18 The Reds have the best run differential (+29) in the NL Central, but were in fourth place heading into this weekend. 22. (22) San Diego Padres - 3.11 23. (24) Florida Marlins - 3.02 24. (25) Los Angeles Dodgers - 2.96 25. (23) Seattle Mariners - 2.93 26. (26) Kansas City Royals - 2.62 27. (27) Chicago Cubs - 2.52 28. (30) Minnesota Twins - 2.41 Minnesota has won seven of their last 10 games and sit just six games out of first place in the AL Central. Considering how the first third of the season went, their standing is miraculous. 29. (28) Baltimore Orioles - 2.39 30. (29) Houston Astros - 2.25

The Opsera is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Christopher Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, July 7th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees -- 4.36 The Yankees have lost three of four since Derek Jeter returned from his calf injury. It has much more to do with the attention surrounding his chase for 3,000 than anything else. The captain is 4-for-18 with a walk and two strikeouts since his July 4th return. 2. (2) Boston Red Sox -- 4.07 They have won seven of eight and regained first place in the American League East on Thursday night. Their rotation is in shambles, but Terry Francona and Co. have found a way to solider on. 3. (4) Atlanta Braves -- 3.97 Jair Jurrjens is my early favorite for the National League Cy Young award. 4. (3) Philadelphia Phillies -- 3.96 5. (7) Texas Rangers -- 3.79 The Rangers, winners of four straight, have a narrow lead over the Angels in the AL West and are entering the All-Star break with momentum. 6. (5) Los Angeles Angels -- 3.74 7. (6) St. Louis Cardinals -- 3.58 8. (8) Tampa Bay Rays -- 3.56 9. (10) San Francisco Giants -- 3.49 10. (9) Milwaukee Brewers -- 3.32 11. (11) Arizona Diamondbacks -- 3.32 12. (T12) Cleveland Indians -- 3.31 13. (21) Pittsburgh Pirates -- 3.30 The Pirates made the biggest jump this week. They are the only team in baseball with an even run differential and have won six of their last 10 games. Pittsburgh trails Milwaukee by just a game in the NL Central. 14. (T12) Oakland Athletics -- 3.28 15. (19) New York Mets -- 3.24 Believe it or not, the Mets have won four of five without Jose Reyes, who is on the disabled list with a hamstring strain. Not surprisingly, New York has won on the strength of their pitching. 16. (T15) Chicago White Sox -- 3.20 17. (T15) Cincinnati Reds -- 3.19 18. (T17) Toronto Blue Jays -- 3.18 The Blue Jays have a team OPS of .737. All-Star Jose Bautista has an OPS of 1.158, while only two only regular players have a total above .720 this season. 19. (20) Washington Nationals -- 3.18 20. (T17) Detroit Tigers -- 3.15 21. (14) Colorado Rockies -- 3.11 Having lost five consecutive games, Colorado dropped seven spots, the biggest slide this week. They have scored just eight runs in their last four games. 22. (22) San Diego Padres -- 3.11 23. (23) Seattle Mariners -- 3.10 24. (24) Florida Marlins -- 2.90 25. (25) Los Angeles Dodgers -- 2.88 26. (27) Kansas City Royals -- 2.69 27. (28) Chicago Cubs -- 2.62 28. (26) Baltimore Orioles -- 2.58 29. (29) Houston Astros -- 2.31 30. (30) Minnesota Twins -- 2.30

RealGM's MLB Team Rankings Through 7/1/11

The Opsera is a statistic RealGM's Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine a team's Opsera, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract the team's ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through Thursday, June 30th’s games: Last week’s ranking is in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees – 4.41 The Yankees have been very fortunate this season, even getting quality starts from Brian Gordon during Bartolo Colon’s time on the disabled list. Having two players -- Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson -- with 20-plus home runs helps as well. 2. (T2) Boston Red Sox – 3.97 Adrian Gonzalez is the front-runner for the American League MVP through the first half of the season. He has played pepper with the Green Monster as expected, hitting .352 (tied for major-league lead) with 71 RBI (best in MLB). 3. (T2) Philadelphia Phillies – 3.90 If Ruben Amaro Jr. adds the right-handed bat that Charlie Manuel has campaigned for, the Phillies will be a fixture in the top-three for the remainder of the season. 4. (4) Atlanta Braves – 3.82 5. (9) Los Angeles Angels – 3.65 6. (T6) St. Louis Cardinals – 3.62 7. (5) Texas Rangers – 3.60 8. (10) Tampa Bay Rays – 3.47 9. (8) Milwaukee Brewers – 3.45 Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder form one of the game’s best one-two punches. It will be interesting to see if Braun’s numbers drop should Fielder leave as a free agent. 10. (T12) San Francisco Giants – 3.41 11. (T6) Arizona Diamondbacks – 3.33 T12. (14) Oakland Athletics – 3.31 -- (T15) Cleveland Indians – 3.31 14. (11) Colorado Rockies – 3.30 T15. (17) Cincinnati Reds – 3.29 -- (18) Chicago White Sox – 3.29 Paul Konerko is aging like a fine wine with 21 home runs and 61 RBI through Thursday’s action. T17. (T12) Detroit Tigers – 3.24 An injury to either Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer would ruin Detroit’s chances in the American League Central. The pair has combined for 20 of the team’s 44 wins. -- (19) Toronto Blue Jays – 3.24 19. (20) New York Mets – 3.21 20. (T15) Washington Nationals – 3.20 21. (22) Pittsburgh Pirates – 3.18 22. (23) San Diego Padres – 3.15 23. (21) Seattle Mariners – 3.09 24. (24) Florida Marlins – 3.00 25. (26) Los Angeles Dodgers – 2.93 The Dodgers are always in the headlines because of owner Frank McCourt’s legal and financial issues, but Matt Kemp (.331, 22 home runs and 63 RBI) is flirting with a Triple Crown season. 26. (25) Baltimore Orioles – 2.83 27. (27) Kansas City Royals – 2.69 28. (30) Chicago Cubs – 2.57 29. (28) Houston Astros – 2.40 30. (29) Minnesota Twins – 2.21
